I lived in the US for awhile and live in a country highly influenced by the US.
I found the people there very friendly and welcoming to anyone at all.But extremely ignorant of issues outside their country.Even very well educated friends seemed to know little about other countries.I found the people preoocuppied with 'things' and their careers [so time poor].
Most of all I found the humour, conversations
personalities of people to be much more affected by media, music, popular culture, celebrity, marketing etc there.
People seem to belong to particular marketed groups.
e.g "emo" "indie" personality bound up with certain music and lifestyle. They all had similar ways of talking, liked the same things etc.
Humour always referenced something on tv.This is very much how my country is becoming too.
I found the lack of 'world news' on tv strange ,maybe it's because so much is going on in the US all the time.I was not use to seeing murders, major violence on the local news so often. Here it's usually car accident, politics or other minor incident.
The amount of pharmaceutical[drug] ads was the most 'weird' of all the things I saw [this was in 2000],they came on all the time [I had never seen drug ads before] Drugs for shyness and anxiety were advertised the most. The magazines which had ten times the amount of ads then those in my country, also had many drug ads too.
Also prescription style drugs are freely available in the kmarts/megastores???
Newspapers seemed very biased but that happens in all countries.
Came across many young people with some form of 'mental illness' [depression, self cutting, bipolar, anxiety etc etc] seems to be rife in the US.High amount of people on some form of medication 'prozac' etc.
Lot of overweight people, lot of tv channels [I could'nt believe it]
I think US television is extremely entertaining more so than any other country.
But lacks substance/deep meaning and is not that educational or informative.PBS was quite good.
Alot of people's time spent in malls and other mega complexes.Very bizaare food in the aisles frozen "sausage and pancake on a stick" ,blue maple syrup, all sorts of cereals, lots of packaged processed food.
Obsessive about celebrities/famous people.

I have no problem when the U.S. helps to keep this planet in a good human rights condition. You don't get a human rights award for Guantanamo (hope you are informed about - independent)
To stay in Iraq is just for oil matters. Bin Laden is already dead, and he was operating during his entire life in Afghanistan not Iraq. Now, G. W. needs a new enemy (the weapon industry and the agencies too) - Iran is the next station on G.W.'s road map of the middle east and the best way to start the next world war.
I don t pay taxes to the U.S and i don t lose family members. Your voice is your choice.

Naturally nation-states gravitate towards a hegemonic power because they have certain necessities that the hegemon can provide. However there is always the tendency for the hegemon to develop a wrong notion of its infallibility and perfectness. This is the problem America as a nation has. I believe if America can develop a sense of modesty, the nation can truly be great.

USA is the country with some of the greates and best innovations. Unfortunately I also believe that you are currently being led by a FOOL and warmonger who is using scare tactics to stay in power. USAID IBIllions to many of us) are often seen as US buying goodwill. The US people will soon wake up and kick Bush out to return to their place as world leader rather than world bully.

I'm an American, and asking people "are we the greatest country?" just makes us all look like arrogant asses. National pride is one thing, but we don't have to be snotty and use terms like that. It sounds so much like "enough about me, what do you think of me?" Vain and self-centered.
Be careful with your word choice. I have no problem with the expressions of the other respondent who said that we are "haughty" - I read the question and was appalled.
Our government (an extension of each of us individually because we elected them) is not making us popular. They don't need our help in this. I'd like to travel abroad safely someday...
