Furnitures are made of hard wood and in that extreme cold climate it woudnt fire unless and until a lot of fire is applied. Books are made of paper which has more surface area exposed compared to density and easily catches fire. I guess thats what might have driven them to do that.

Now, in some library's that would be true, but in the one I'm at the furniture isnt really wood, so burning it would have actually been toxic... so yeah... but even if there was some, they could have just not thought abou it, decided it wasn't worth trying ot fit it into the fire... or just the fact the director of the movie wanted to make a statement with the book burning..

That's funny, but I can get superstitious with supernatural horror movies. Film-maker do a real freakin good job scaring the **** out of us. Don't worry, I watched the movie years, you'll be ok. It like when that guy said that the end of the world would end May 21 2011. You'll be alive long enough to experience your up-coming special event.

Books light faster. Plus they are plentiful. Besides, who wants to sit on the floor? Your question should have been what kind of fool puts a fireplace in a room filled with valuable books? That is just asking for people to burn them.

It may be that the furniture would have been hard to break apart but also that treated wood might release toxic fumes as it burned. Those were some very smart kids so maybe they knew this.

Because they didn't want to spend their time waiting for rescue sitting on STACKS OF BOOKS. For that matter, why didn't they think they could live on chips and candy? I remember a friend in high school who did it for like 3 years....

Because it is very difficult to keep that large of a piece of wood that has been chemically processed "lit"; paper is kindling and will burn so much easier.

good point, never thought of that. They might not have had anything to break apart the furniture. They also would've needed books to start up the fire if it wasn't going already.

yeah true but hey in alot of movies there are little bits that only the observant viewer will notice, i think writers these days are getting a bit weak and need to put a bit more effort in sometimes
