If you mean wealth that's spread out over a number of Americans then real estate.
BUT if you mean individual people (about 1% of the population) who are filthy rich then a combination of stocks, business, inheritance).
Think of people like Bill Gates (microsoft), Warren Buffet (berkshire hathaway - an investment company), Paul Allen (microsoft), Prince Alwaleed (oil and investor in citigroup, fairmont hotel & resorts), Kenneth Thomson(media/entertainment conglomerate), Li Ka-shing (diversified in many businesses). They are in the top 10 billionaires.

Commercial real estate by far has provided the greatest return to the largest group of people. Billionaires are created with commercial real estate; and I am not just talking about Donald Trump.

Own business. End of story.
Who can outbid what Bill Gates has achieved in terms of the personal wealth that he has achieved after starting (with a partner) his own business?
Of course, he is now gifting most of it to charity, which is a wonderful conclusion.
This surely "trumps" Trump and his ilk.
