No it shouldn't but what exactly does it smell like. it could be that you have the belt to tight or too loose. It could also be a bad alternator or faulty connection. Maybe it isn't even the alternator at all check the area your working at and make sure you didn't damage or break anything

make the new altenator what? go bad, yes it can. Will a new altenator smell funny, yes a little as it warms up and a bit of the assembly lube and paints are heated, but mind you only if you were to smell it very closely. If you can smell it strong from one foot away or so I would say your regulator is probably not controlling the outgoing charge correctly and is probably cooking your armature, which would smell funny.

No, it should not smell funny! And if you did not replace the voltage regulator there is a good chance of ruining that new alternator!

Unless you have some kind of antique, the regulator is IN the alternator. And, no, should not "smell", unless you have it too tight on the belt and are smelling the belt burn.

no the new atlernator should not smell funny the first time it is being used maybe there is a connection problem or a faulty alternator

how funny?
like new electronics or metal peices coated in oil getting hot for the first time funny?
or smoking and bursting into flame funny?
why dont you check it with a meter
is it charging ok?
