Very often good books make a bad movie and bad books make a good movie.
For instance Robert Bloch's poor novel Psycho vs. Hitchcock's masterpiece. While I've never seen an adequate movie version of Pride and Prejudice (the BBC has produced a TV mini series, starring Colin Firth, though, that comes close to the genius of the book).
Stephen King's best novel It resulted in a dull film and Kubrick made a piece of art out of King's rather cheap Shining (King didn't like the film). Greene's Third man isn't exactly his best book but Carol Reed's version (starring Orson Welles) is impressive.
There are exceptions to the rule, of course, Hitchcock turned Highsmith's Strangers on a Train into a brilliant film.

The shining is probably the closest. Any other movies I've seen have never been better than the book.

I LOVED the movie version of The Last Unicorn much better than the book.
That's really a hard choice overall because I love reading so many books. If you ask next week I'll give you a different answer. ^.~

funny you say the Shining mine is Dolores Claiborne..the Movie was so much better.
it is definitely rare when that happens
I think most directors translate Stephen King novels into better films as long as he doesn't work with them on the scripting..in his wrtings he adds too many absurd storylines and actions...but has the base foundation of a good scary story or novel

Wuthering Heights (the Ralph Fiennes version)... I read it when I was about 12 and didn't understand it very well, so when I saw the movie I reread the book - the movie is much better.

None. In my experience I have always enjoyed more the books than the movies, so far no movies better than books!

One can't compare books to movies !
Books are far better coz they are original by the time movie releases we already know it's story !
