I ask that person out right why I need to know these things. I also tell that person that I happen to like whom ever they are gossiping about. If in fact that's really true. Sometimes, just for spite, I may tell them that they should hear what everyone says about them. I don't hear a lot of gossip at my job. I know a few people gossip behind my back because I get told about it. That doesn't effect me much though as I am in a position to attract a certain amount of jealousy. It just lets me know I'm doing a good job of being there.

Just drop gentle subtleties that you don't believe that to be true. Or you don't think those are nice things to say. You don't have to fly in the face of people to get a point across, usually anyway. If you ever make the mistake of asking how that person knows all this juicy info they will surely fill you in.

I work in a hair salon where gossip runs rampid!
I just tell them that it has nothing to do with me, so I don't get involved.
Stay out of office gossip. You are being paid to do your job, not speculate on others lives or how they live them. You will find that you will have your job longer than most if you just stay out of it.

I encountered this problem also. Iam not a gossip and do not condone it. I have simply said when it starts that Iam sorry but I do not engage in this type of activity and leave it at that. Sometimes, I just walk away

been there and they can be vicious....you walk away and they figure you think you are too good for them and become a target for their gossip...I tried to stay busy elsewhere in the building, had a friend join me for lunch so I didn't need to be with them...took my breaks at times when they didn't and yes they got the message and I'm sure I became a topic....
