In the book, not the movie, the scariest part for me was when the topiary animals went after the guy. I was reading in bed at night with my husband asleep beside me, and that part GRABBED me! Wow. Then in the movie, they changed the topiary animals to a maze, and they totally lost my support. lol

Don't remember if this scene was in the book or only the movie - when Wendy reads what Jack's been typing over and over and over...
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."
You know he's really gone around the bend. Raises the hair on the back of my neck everyy time.

I didn't think it was scary at all, because The Shining was when I realized that Stephen King put out a lot of pulp that wasn't worth reading. I found the idea of a possessed hotel difficult to believe, and I could never suspend my disbelief to make it seem plausible. It really hacked me off too, because King does put out some interesting work (i.e. Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, and The Stand).

The part where the "Hotel" helps Jack out of the locked pantry. It makes you start to wonder what else the ghosts in the hotel are capable of and the idea of Jack wandering loose in the hotel when Wendy and Danny think he is safely locked away is creepy. I read this book around ten years ago and the whole scenario is still fresh in my mind.

Oh there are so many. I personally liked something that differed from the movie version. I loved when Jack had the croquet mallet at the end and he was chasing Danny down the hallways SMASHING it on the walls and talking crazy. Great visual and cool writing. King is king!
