ive been drumming for 4.5 years now, playing punk rock the whole time. i love it more than any style too. i recently joined up with my friends in a hardcore/metal band. these are some of my closest friends, but i dont fit the style very well. i dont want to quit, but i need help learning to play metal more.

Talk it over with your friends/bandmates. They chose you to play in the band. See if they are happy with your style as it is, or if they feel you need to change, and how.

If you don't think you are playing to your capacity with this band, and cannot do so without compromising your style, then you should consider moving on.

Without hearing you play, I could only guess what type of changes you might need.
