I would bet that most people, especially liberals really do not know what this means. They have adopted it as a political "slur", and the masses have said "oh that sounds really bad, let's call Republicans that". Now go look it up and come back to me and explain why someone should be offended if you call them a neocon. Small one liners speak for themselves on this matter.

By the way, I'm not offended in any way by this. I think it's quit funny how it is used by so many people these days.

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, which explains the meaning of words, neoconservative means "the first variant of American conservatism in the past century that is in the 'American grain.' It is hopeful, not lugubrious; forward-looking, not nostalgic; and its general tone is cheerful, not grim or dyspeptic. Its 20th-century heroes tend to be TR, FDR, and Ronald Reagan."

... well... words can take on many different meanings in context...

but as to what it "technically means"... you're right, many use it incorrectly...

but, if you want to get into what words "technically mean"... no word IS MISUSED more on here than "liberal"... conservatives have NO CLUE OR ARE EVEN CLOSE TO THE ACTUAL DEFINITION... which they also use as a slur...

at least most people use neo-conservative in the same ball park as to the actual meaning...

people who use the word liberal can be so far off it actually makes everyone stupider that reads their comments...

No - Most people do not even know that neo-conservatives exist. As long as the average American has his or her DirectTV and their tv dinners, they do not care about what is brewing on the political front.

Not all republicans are neo-conservatives.
