Yes, I do believe it existed. I believe that most mythology is based in historical events, and then they get garbled over time.

I don't believe Atlantis was in the Atlantic ocean, appealing as that theory is, but in the Mediterranean/Aegean area. A fellow has recently come out with a theory that it was the city of Troy. That poses it's own set of problems, but he made a pretty good case for it. He did, at least, convince me that the location had to be within the pillars of Hercules and not without.
Check with your librarian for the most recent books out on Atlantis. I wish I could remember the name of the book for you,
but I can't.

I believe that there was a continent called Atlantis that probably sank because of some natural disaster. I don't believe in any of the sci/fi stuff that some people have said about it.

I believe that there had to be a core culture that disappeared thousands of years ago.not so much dissappeared as dispersed, going out in all directions of the earth, each carrying with them aspects of that culture.its the only logical reason for so many similarities from architecture on to exist in far separated cultures.
the major problem with it is calling it atlantis, this immediately conjures up mythical thoughts and cancels out reason in many people.I believe that by the time it was written down it had already been somewhat embelished with morality tales and the like.
my personal opinion is that the "island" didn't sink so much as the sea rose.during the ice age water levels were much lower and its likely that cultures built their societies by the water. It gradually rose and people were forced away,no sudden catastrophic island sinking.
ever see how far down people have to dig to get artifacts on dry land? there could be anything under dirt underwater.

no one can really know.... if there isn't, what can prove there isn't? if there is, what could prove there is one? following science would promote atlantis as a myth... following folklore would make science eat her own words. so no one wins... so let's subjugate it and step within the middle. folklore/myths are tales where some are made by facts, science is a tale of facts and figures. so let's tie them up together... come up with the answer which is, one has to exist to prove the other wrong or correct...

It was probably indeed a real place, however I don't believe all the speculation about how advanced the civilizationa was. Probably just like the Greek city states.
