It's an electric dryer. I got it used from a co-worker's son. They thought it needed an element, and since it wasn't drying at all, I bought one and my boyfriend installed it. Then it still didn't work, so I replaced the thermostat because it looked blown. I replaced it myself (actually there are two thermostats). They didn't come with wiring directions, but it seemed pretty straightforward because one of the pieces would only work in a certain spot. So they can't be in the wrong place. The dryer ran for one load to get dry (maybe 40 mins). The next morning, I was 20 mins into drying my comforter and it just stopped. When I touched the outside of the dryer, it was very hot. I checked the breaker and made sure it wasn't tripped. I even turned it off and then on again to check. Still nothing. I let it cool for several hours while I was at work, and still nothing. The door switch is fine too.

It seems that Dusty may have nailed it for you but I don't know about green wires (most likely blue and possibly a striping of another color). The thermal fuse on the Whirlpool electric dryers will shut down the whole operation. It seems that you may have either inherited the problem with the thermal fuse since you needed to replace the heating element or you have a problem with your venting. The thermal fuse that Dusty described to you is designed to open the circuit to prevent overheating and possibly fire when the vent is clogged or kinked or if the lint filter has not been cleaned or is blocked with residue from fabric softener. The filter duct can also be blocked and should be checked by removing the four screws that hold it to the blower housing (the part that the thermal fuse is fastened to) and the two screws up where the lint filter is that hold it to the top of the dryer.

On the back of the case near the big hole where the heat comes out to the vent hose, there should be a thermal switch. It should have two green wires running to it. It will be a small rectangular plastic thing, may be held in with a screw. It is a glass reed switch fuse in a plastic housing and is made to trip when the out put vent is plugged with lint so the hot air can't get out like it should. You need to take the big hose off, reach in and get all the excess lint out of the back side of the fans housing and just (for a test only) hook the two wires together and see if it comes on. If it does, then the reed switch fuse is blown and needs to be replaced.
