Parallel and serial are terms that are more complicated than you might think.

Consider the IDE interface. It was parallel (PATA) for many years. Now Serial ATA (SATA) is the new technology that provides a lot more bandwidth (and room to grow substantially more).

Now consider the old COM ports on older PC's. The first ones were serial. Parallel came later and provided more bandwidth. It seems like the trend these days has reversed itself. Therefore, I would caution your line of thought that one is superior to the other.

Actually, a method called "multiplexing" is used in broadband connections which would be equivalent to what you called "parallel."

With internet connection speeds, the more you pay, the better bandwidth you get. Try OC-45! :)
