We have bats that live in the overhang to our roof. I know a lot about them just from casual association. First off, in North America very few bats carry rabies. That is just a myth. Second of all bats are highly social creatures. A lone bat would be just plain miserable. Third, bats catch their food mid-flight, which makes feedings very hard (note that a single bat can eat up to 600 mosquitoes an hour and they feed for a greater portions of the night, finding that much food on a daily basis is going to be extremely difficult). Fourth, bats are usually migratory and will have the instinct to travel and will be stir-crazy if made to stay in one place. Your best bet for having bats around you is to put up a bat house outside along the side of your house or in a nearby tree. Then just watch them from afar. BTW though they don’t usually carry rabies they bite at will, and their mouths can carry infection and be VERY painful.

Bottom line: bats can’t be kept as pest, best bet is just to try to attract them to your property. Keeping wild animals is just cruel.

It is illegal in th UK- they are a protected species so only licensed rehabilitators are allowed to keep them. They can sometimes also carry lyssavirus which is closely related to rabies, and just as deadly to people.
