Well from what I gather, faster than light trvel will only help you see the events as they occured in the past. How would you be able to identify the entire group of light rays that were relevant to you? How do you knwo which light rays will strike you and the items of you interest? So how can you really go backwards (or forwards) for that matter?

And if it were possible, why haven't people from the future revealed themselves so that humanity could benefit?

Future? Yes. Past? No

We obviously don't know everything about Physics yet, but traveling backward in time is in essence impossible. There are some people that theorize that it's possible with worm holes, but that seems very unlikely for many reasons. Traveling backward in time would violate many principles that do not appear to be able to be violated. The only possible way would be to re-arrange all of the matter and energy in the universe like it was in the past. Basically making the future into the past. After traveling back, you would of course need to stop the future "you" from doing it again, or it would cause an infinite loop.

There are many ways to travel into the future. None of which are easy, but possible. The basic idea, is that everything is already moving into the future, you just need to slow down your rate, or speed up everyone elses. One of the best ways is to travel very very close to the speed of light. Your time dilation would slow way down, which would allow you to move into the future much faster than everyone else. After you slow back down to a normal velocity, a great deal of time would have passed by. Using a massive gravity well, like a black hole, you could in theory, use it's gravitational effects to produce the same result. You would just need to go into orbit around a black hole for a while at just the right distance, and then escape from orbit.
