Hum, submissive means to yield to the will or authority of others. Depending on one's religious and ethnic beliefs, there are some who believe a woman is to be submissive. I believe a woman should be respectful of herself and of her man, but I'm sad that our world today has gotten so out of balance that the old fashioned but still modern marriage vows seldom works because the expectations of the spouse are often not reasonable and proper as God intended them to be. The way marriage looks today has changed drastically from "yesteryear." In yesteryear, women did honor and obey till death did they part, but they also took a lot of abuse which women do not tolerate today. I feel there has to be a give and take in our modern marriages just like marriages of long ago, but depending on the 2 people involved, they each have to decide their place in the marriage. God hasn't changed the concept of marriage; man has, but man has also changed the whole way of living so that women also must work to economically live. In today's world, it's nothing for one spouse to live on the East coast, and the other the West coast. They meet intermittently when time permits but each of them are so glad to see each other they glady are submissive as long as it fits each other's needs. As long as being submissive doesn't imply following orders, not allowed to leave the house, spends no $$ other than for groceries, and in general takes away her self esteeem, I believe in submissive. But I believe that women also have to examine how much they love the man they intend to marry, because if she can't follow the vows, it will end anyway. Our modern way of high tech living has changed the way we live with each other, and I would hope each is as respectful as they want to be treated.

Submissive women are actually more of a modern deveolpment. Ancient marriages were more of a contract between the man and the woman for mutual support. The man would support the woman (and children) financially, or physically while she provided for him and their children with food, craft, and other things he wasn't capable of doing. Women being submissive is a development of the past 300 years where coin and the economy really got going, money meant more to a family than the things the woman could offer; so as a response she had to become submissive to the one who brought home the money.

this question cannot be answered without categorizing people into different cultures. in some countries/cultures, marriage have not change very much for years. they are still expected to be submissive. the opposite is also true for modernized cultures that has evolved together with the world. in these places, women has contributed to the success of the country and hence they are no longer submissive be it in society or at home. more importantly, a marriage is different for everyone. just like everything else in life, different people have different preference. the key thing is making your partner happy, be it being submissive or not submissive.

Submissive is not blind obedience. It is your your good attitude to make a decision work, eventhough you do not agree with the decision. In return your mate love for you will grow every time. Respect means more to a man than love. Love mean more to a woman than man. Submission is a form of deep respect for your husband, he need it to love you more with each passing day. That is why in the bible a wife is commanded to have deep respect for her husband. A husband is commanded to love his wife as his own body, for no man hates his own flesh. Yes a woman is still expected to be submissive.

And actually the Bible further states that husband and wives are to submit to one another in love. Hey, at least the Bible is not asking the women to love their husbands (like the Bible says the husband is supposed to do) as Christ loved the church!!!!! That means, dear friends, that husbands are to be willing to lay down their lives for their wives. Christ died for the church, remember. Anyway, the whole submission thing is not like doormat stuff, it is loving submission, because you love one another so much.
