People from India are Indians.
Those from America are calso called Indians

But you see, blame Europenas for creating such confusion because they, in quest of searching the sea route to India, went on discovering unknown lands and thought they had really discovered India. But getting the Golden Bird was not that easy and so in course of time , they dicovered Carrebean Islands, South America, North America etc and named the inhabitants as Indians. Though Indians were not yet discovered. It only happened with Vasco Da Gama Reaching the coast of Calicut in 1497 AD.

So People from India are Indians. From America are Native Americans.

They are simply called Indians. The natives of North America are called Red Indians. The people of West Indies are called WestIndians and the people of the Amazon Basin are called Amazon Indians.

The Indians have been given their name from the river Indus which is in the western frontiers of the subcontinent. The westerners comming to India had to cross this river in order to visit India. There was a time when Greeks ruled the western world and they called all people east of Hindukush mountains as Hindus. Thus, all Indians were then called Hindus regardless of religion.

But today it is wrong call Indians as Hindus since the ancient Aryan Religion is called Hinduism and the followers Hindus. People of all faith now form a part of the secular country of India.

Simple really, People from India are called Indians, and those from North America are Native Americans. No need for confusion.

If it persists however, I suppose Asian Indians would do.

And calling people from India Hindus is stupid as not all Indians are Hindus.

Well first of all not all Indians from India are Hindus, so I would refrain from calling all Indians- Hindus (as suggested by the person before)

However, since I am an Indian of Indian heritage I usually say that I am Asian Indian thus avoiding any confusion.

I don't call them "East Indians". That only reinforces the mistake that Columbus made in the first place.

If they're actually from India (as in the Indian subcontinent in Asia), just call them "Indians" pure and simple.
And call the people who lived in North America before the white people arrived "Native Americans" or "Indigenous Peoples".
