because it is their natural instinct to chew on something. Buy them some chew sticks at wal-mart. They provided a safe chew object for ours, and it stopped the bar chewing.

There can be a couple reasons - it could genuinely be trying to make an escape, or it could simply be looking for something to chew on. You may want to try putting more things like the wood sticks and other chew toys you can find for hamsters at the pet store in with the little guy and see if that lessens the behavior.

They need to wear down their teeth. All rodents do. Otherwise their teeth will grow too long and they cannot eat and eventually the teeth will grow into the lips. Go to a petstore and get a chew toy. Some animals are picky so be careful on your choice. I would also pick up a T-rex chube. My chinchilla flips out over it and it helps a little with the teeth. But seriously buy some fruit sticks and mineral chews.

To wear down their teeth, . Do they still have those little wooden sticks for Hamsters to chew on? I have not owned a Hamster for 15 years. But I recall reading somewhere that their teeth continue to grow their whole life, so you have to provide something safe and Non- Toxic for them to chew on.Look in the Hamster section in a Petco or Petsmart. You should find something there.

Hamsters just like to chew on things and chewing on things helps to keep their teeth from getting too long. Put a toilet or paper towel roll in the cage or some kind of wooden block so they will chew on those things instead. :)

yes... it is to wear down their teeth.
but my hamsters do it for another purposes - to get my attention and to feed them (they'll do it when they are hungry too). i don't know how they learn the trick. but sometimes they started to bite cage early in the morning just to wake me up to feed them. when i am eating, they will do the same thing as they smell the food.

hamsters need something to chew on so that the growth of their teeth can be shortened and not grow to long . .
can u imagine if the hamsters have super long teeth ??
they wouldnt even be able to eat their nuts and balls . . .
