It is a very soft form of leather.

I paint on leather . I paint simpler things, e.g. cartoons, directly on the jacket. The typical jacket is usually too grainy for my most detailed paintings though. What to do? I go to the leather supply store and buy a whole Napa leather skin. I can get one or two pieces for the back of jackets and several smaller ones for breast and sleeves. I cut it so that the smoothest part is on the area where I paint a face in a figure painting. When I finish the painting, a Korean girl sews it on the jacket. My detailed paintings cost $2500 and up. The customer provides the jacket. Napa leather is a very smooth goatskin. I pay ten times as much for it as for a pigskin about the same size, but it is well worth it to me.

The upper surface of the hide. Smooth and slightly shiny, worked to a soft leather with a fine surface structure. It is expensive because it is a long and extensive process to get it to the texture of being silky smooth.
