Name and author of book about a boy who's father burned him in a hotel room using gasoline???

Have been going nuts trying to find a book I read years ago (in the 80s) Thought the title was simply "David" but there are so many books with David in the title, I'm having trouble find it. Much thanks to anyone who can help. Hope someone out there remembers it.

I remember because I read it..the boy's name was David Rothenberg and this happened in 1983.

Ok...it is named simply, David. It was written by his mother, Marie Rothenberg and Mel White.

FYI, it was also made into a tv movie in 1988. It was very well done and Bernadette Peters played Marie. You should see it if you haven't.
