It depends on what kind of game you're looking for and how many players you have. If you're looking for a light party game, I suggest Apples to Apples, Beyond Balderdash or Time's Up. Party games usually allow many players. If you're looking for a real boardgame, you might want to try one of the less well-known, but very good games that have come out over the last several years. Games like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and Ticket to Ride have a pleasing mix of strategy and luck. If you're looking for something seriously strategic, I recommend Power Grid, Puerto Rico or Caylus. Some of these boardgames only take 4 players, some take up to 6.

You can look these games up at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browser.php?itemtype=game&sortby=rank for more details and you can buy any of them at online stores like Boards and Bits, Funagain, Boulder Games, Thought Hammer, etc., but you will not find most of them at Walmart or Toys R Us.

Check out Cluzzle and Wits and Wagers by Northstar games.

They are fairly new to the market, so not as well known. They are also award winners

There are two games that I discovered as sure-fire wins for small get togethers.

Blockus and Gobblet. Look up those games in your search engine. They don't look that impressive, but trust me, they are original and very addictive.
