Meaning

Keep quiet - say nothing.

Origin

Mum; not mother but 'mmmmm', the humming sound made with a closed mouth. Used by Shakespeare in Henry VI, Part 2. 'Seal up your lips and give no words but mum'.

Years ago "mums the word" came from an advertisement for MUMS under arm deoderant. After listing all the reasons for buying and using their product they ended the comerical with"MUMS THE WORD".

Come from the phrase - mummers play - which was done silently. I think an old english word 'mum' meant silent.
