It's a tough situation, knowing your friend has feelings for you, but you're with someone else.
The most important thing he needs to understand is that he can't say "mean things" about your bf. This is inappropriate and childish. If he really cares about you, he's going to respect who you're with.
Don't let the situation change between you and your current boyfriend. Let things go as normal, and don't worry about your friend. He'll survive.
Don't give details about your relationship to your friend. This is a BIG no-no, because it's very discouraging, disappointing, and disrespectful.
If things don't work out between you and your current bf, give it time, and if you have feelings for your friend, give him a chance after breaking things off.
The most important thing to consider is your feelings. If you aren't attracted to your friend--LET HIM KNOW! Don't lead him on, and you can remain friends if he understands. If he doesn't right away, give it time.
Friends and boyfriends are a tricky thing, but remember to keep everyone's hearts in mind, and everything will work out in the end.
