i think it really does have tyo do with a lack of sleep, that's when i notice them usually.You can see those dark circles there because the skin is so thin, like on your lips, except under your eyes the blood vessels are oxygen starved, versus at your lips they're oxygen-rich. Some people just naturally have permanant dark spots there. Also, if for some reason your skin on your face is lighter, perhaps lack of sleep, stress, etc., then that could also cause the dark spots to become more pronounced.
