Libertarians are the political party that believes in the most liberty and personal freedom for the people. They would legalize pot and give out any liberties that did not interfere with other people’s liberties. They also believe that the government should have as little involvement in the daily life of its citizens as possible. One plank of the Libertarian party is to legalize prostitution. Something that would give most Republicans a heart attack. The Republicans are not known for their liberal point of view. They also like government regulation and control as much as possible, except when it might interfere with business, something that gives Libertarians epileptic seizures.
If the Libertarians were close to any major political party it would be the Democrats.

No, there are too many differences between the Libertarian Party and the Republican party, aside from smoking grass.
Libertarians favor all of the following things that most Republicans would hate.
1. Freedom to engage in any consensual sexual act.
2. Opposition to corporate subsidies or special tax breaks for corporations.
3. No foreign entanglements.
4. Strict separation of church and state.
5. A principled opposition to the draft.
No, Republicans and Libertarians are quite different, in many ways.

I am a Libertarian. I don't smoke dope although I think it should be legal. Libertarians believe in a simple doctrine: Personal responsibility. I shod be able to smoke week, inject heroin, or whistle Dixie for the matter. If I get in a car while drunk or high, then I should be arrest. See the correlation: hurt or have the potential to actually hurt someone else - pay the price. Do it to myself - no crime.
We also believe that charity starts at home. We have an entire infrastructure of entitlements which start at welfare to excessive pensions. We need to get back to basics. Help those who need immediate help - but not pay someone for not working. (and certainly don't allow someone to retire at 50 with a 90% pension - no private sector employee ever gets that).

Libertarians resemble the old Republicans, not these new religious neo-cons.

" Libertarians resemble the old Republicans, not these new religious neo-cons."
I would consider myself a Republican, but not this modern spin that ***** up old Republican values. This person's answer was the best one

Mainstream conservatives and libertarians
/anarcho-capitalists are sometimes uneasy allies. Murray Rothbard definitely had a love/hate relationship with mainstream conservatism.

I take umbrage to that.
I AM NOT a republican, not by any means, in any way, shape, or form.
BTW- what's wrong with smoking grass?
