Right now we live in North Texas, and it's already sooo freakin hot here I can't imagine NOT having one in Houston. Plus, the homes (even with pools) are very inexpensive there. I'm just concerned about cost of maintenance, insurance, etc...

The majority of people who have pools use them a great deal the first year, 1/2 as much the next, and not at all after that. The expense of maintaining them and the time involved in doing so grows and grows. Your homeowners insurane will skyrocket because of the pool! The pool actually lowers the resale value of the home for the above mentioned reasons....best advice?....forget the pool and make nice with the neighbors who have one!

I live about 40 minutes south of downtown Houston. I bought this home because it has a pool, and I enjoy it a lot. As some of the other answers state, you probably won't use it as frequently in future years as you do the first year. It's personal choice, as to whether you like to spend time just floating around on a hot summer weekend. Keep in mind....Unless you have very large lot, and lots of money, most home in ground concrete pools are not big enough for lap swimming. They are just for fun.

From a financial standpoint you won't get your money back when you sell the house, but it will make the home more desireable to some buyers.

In addition, you will need to run a pool pump...usually 1/2 horsepower dailey for a couple of hours. It will add to your electric bill. You also need to maintain the filtration system and pool chemistry. It's not difficult, but it cannot be ignored.

And finally, Houston has mosquitos....lots of them in the summer time. My pool has a screen enclosure which keeps them out and makes the pool more enjoyeable. But a screen enclosure will cost at least half as much as the pool.

Houston is hot and humid. A pools is important! Temps range close to 99 degrees much of the summer. Almost everything in the city is air conditioned. The city has two seasons summer and February!
