Oh gosh...I would imagine that it would have a profound influence on an individual that is bi+racial...but I cannot speak with any authority because I am not...my heritage is all caucasion/western european (Irish, German, Dutch).

I also think that how the stereo-types would influence will vary upon the society...I can only speak for American society since that is the one in which I live.

I have always noticed that racial groups still tend to naturally segregate...most white people I know have primarily white friends while most black people have primarily black friends...the same with Vietnamese and hispanic populations as well. For someone who is bi-racial...I would imagine this might be difficult. Everyone wants to feel like they belong and everyone is paranoid about some small thing setting them apart from the group.

I think that ethnic minorities tend to have a very tight sense of community and bonding with groups of the same ethnic origin...it's been necessary for them to build these support systems amongst their 'own kind' as a result of living in a society who has only just begun to accept them as equals (we've come a long way in a short amount of time...but we still have some ways to go yet!)...for someone who is say...half-black and half-vietnamese...they may be torn between the two groups. They may feel like they need to fit in with the 'black stereo type' and listen to the same kind of music and so forth...but they may also want to stay connected to their vietnamese roots.

I think stereo-types in general have a profound effect on ethnic minorities in US whether we want to admit it or not...

influential.

some of my bi-racial friends experience a little bit of resentment from peers of both of their racial groups...kind of a "you're not one of us, go away" kind of thing.

for me, many people do not recognize that i am mixed and they will stick to what they think is going on regardless of truth...oh well, this is life, ya?
