G'day,
I am assuming that you have separate modem and router devices.
1. Connect the modem to your laptop directly and make sure that you can access the internet properly.
2. Connect the modem to the router (you may want to read the little information leaflet from the router to make sure you are connecting the right cable to the right port from modem to router). Turn both devices on and make sure that the WAN or internet light on.
3. Turn your computer on and make sure you enable the wireless ethernet card connection. For setting-up purposes please place the ibook as close to the router as possible.
4. The wireless connection should pick-up your router's wireless network (usually defaulted to using the router's brand, eg. D-Link or Netgear). Connect to the wireless network. At this stage, you should be able to browse the internet straight away.
5. You then need to set the security so nobody else can use your internet connection for free (eg. your neighbour). What you need to do is as follows:
* Click Start button and choose 'Run'
* Type cmd in the field
* A black box will open. On the prompt, type: ipconfig. Press Enter
* Make note of the IP address for the Gateway (eg: 192.168.0.1)
* Open Internet Explorer. Type in the Gateway's IP address on the web address field
* Login to the router. Find the Security tab.
* Choose WPA encryption. Enter whatever password you want to use. Save the changes and you may need to reboot the router.
* Once re-booted, your network connection will be disconnected. Choose your wireless network again and this time it will ask for the password. Enter the password that you've entered in the router earlier.
That's it! Now you have a working and secure wireless connection. Good Luck :)

This can be complicating and frusterating but not overly hard to do. You first need to install your hardware, which is the router itself- Plug the modem into this and the other port to your computer tower. You need to also make sure that the router you bought will actually read the wireless card adapter that is within your IBook. If you have determined the above then you move on to installation:
1. there should be an install disk that came with the hardware- you will need to install this on the computer where your direct connection is, ie. desktop. Reboot your computer after install if not prompted by the software.
2. Set up a secure WAN if you do not do this every neighbor within range can not only hook into about 11Mbps of your connection, but they are able to hack into vital computer info, if good- so run through the Wizard you would find on your Desktop/IBook under network connections.
3. Once done with this utility you need to go to your IBook and run a network search under Connection Utility/ Network Connection- then search for wireless network- find yours, click on it, place your password in and wah-lah-:)

You need a wireless card on the desktop or you can plug the router into the destop through an ethernet cable. Program the router to issue DHCP addresses to the computers. Set up the computers to receive the address. You may also want to set up the copmputer to receive the SSID from the router. The router manual should walk you through the setup.

i'm going to assume you have a cable/dsl connection already. since you didn't specify the Brand name of your router, I'll go with the basics...
From your broadband (cable/dsl) modem, take the CAT5 network cable (thats the one that looks like a phone jack) and plug it into the WAN port on your router (the WAN port is usually separated away from the LAN ports on the back). If the wireless card on your iBook is set to "automatic", you should be pretty much good to go...If it isn't then try some of these steps..
First, you'll need a 2nd network cable to plug from one of the LAN ports on the router to your iBook....then type in these numbers in your web browser's address bar...
192.168.1.1 (for Linksys) OR
192.168.0.1 (for D-Link) OR
check the router manual for the DEFAULT router address....
This will get you to the routers configuration utility page...
after that, there should be a tab you can click for DHCP...insde that area, there should be a DHCP CLIENTS list...click that and see if your computer is listed TWICE there (one will be your wired connection, the other is the wireless)...The address should read...
192.168.1.1xx (say 100 for the wired)
192.168.1.1xx (say 101 for the wireless)
(these are linksys router addresses...substitute 192.168.0.1xx for D-Link, or whatever your router address is)
If you DON'T have 2 numbers listed in the client list, you will have to go in and set your wireless card up manually...
get to the wireless card's properties, find the TCP/IP protocol list, and set it up to look like this....
IP address: 192.168.1.100
Sub-Net Mask:: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
(again, these are linksys addresses, make the usual substitutions for other brand names, but keep the sub-net mask numbers).
Note here that these techniques used for Windows-type systems, but as far as manually configuring your wireless card, these steps should work for you....
good luck
