it's all about the money... the more the sugar, the sweeter it gets... I've had good luck with my TDK, but I'm sure Sony would be a good brand. Don't go to crazy about it, really.
Yes is a good Idea to get a combo, DVD +-RW Double Layer, is the way to go.

I will recommend LiteOn, either Combo or CD Writer. Because this is the brand i have used for more than 1 1/2 years.
From my experience, this brand is most compatible and steady. I have tried to use others, but some will always error and some burn success, but cannot read.

CD Writer AT THE MINIMUM cuz u wanna back up ur files.
Combo drive to Watch DVD movies and read DVD data discs.
DVD writer to write DVDs. Hope that helps.

instead of cd writer or combo, u go for a dvd writer. sony,samsung tdk are allgood.
