INDIA
India is bestowed with large bio-diversity in the world. That is why India is termed as SUB-CONTINENT. We have all kinds of vegetation with all natural varieties. For example, about 900 natural vaieties of banana are preserved in the germ plasm field bank of the National Research Centre for Banana, Trichy (Tamil Nadu). Like this, in all the crops, different varieties are existing. These are to be concerved for our future and for further generation. Now-a-days, the genetically modified seed materials are becoming very popular. They are from the foreign countries. This invasion of genetically modified materials, gradually destroys the bio-diversity of our nation. For example, the cotton seeds of like this kind have TERMINATOR GENES. The seeds extracted from this genetically modified cotton (BT-cotton) will not germinate. So, the Indian cotton farmers have to depend on the foreign countries for the next season crops. Simultaneously, the preserving or conserving of the local (indegenous) variety seeds is slowly vanishing. After some times, the total Indian agriculture should depend upon foreign countries for the seed materials. Even this leads to vanishing of the ITKs (Indegenous Technological Knowledge) of the rural people of agriculatural profession. So, this is the crucial time to conserve our bio-diversity. Now the importance of conservation of bio-diversity is being realised slowly in India. For example, in one remote village of Andhra Pradesh, the FESTIVAL OF BIO-DIVERSITY is regularly celebrated. In this village, seeds of all varieties of cereals, pulses, vegetables, grasses etc. are preserved in every house and they are displayed to the public people during this festival. Gradually, this festival daws the attention of all foreigners, environmentalist, local political people etc. Now with their supports this festival gains momentum. People in this village cultivate all types of cereals, pulses ect. in a small patches of fields. The seeds from these crops are extracted and preserved. Even we can see the crop and seeds of 'THINAI', 'VARAGU', 'SAAMAI' etc. Now-a-days, no body could have seen such very old, peculiar crops. The theme of this festival emphasis the concept of bio-diversity conservation.

Start with a book called The Biodiversity Crisis: Losing What Counts by the American Museum of Natural History. I'm sure you can buy it on amazon.com The worlds foremost authority in biodiversity is Edward O. Wilson. Look for his most recent book on the subject.
