Yup. I saw a guy hitchhiking on my way back home this morning after running some errands. I also saw a couple of people on the entrance ramp of the highway with a huge bag hitchhiking.

Sure they do, but not in great numbers and not everywhere. It is not legal in many states, and everyone these days knows the dangers of picking up hitchhikers. I did see some on Maui last week, but I am told that people generally pick up only their friends. i think that is the exception. Also, with higher speed limits, not only only is it more dangerous, but people don't want to go from 65 to 0 to pick up some stranger who may be armed and rob you (or worse).

Some serial killers stock in trade are hitchhikers. If people are told not to hitchhike, they will hitchhike anyway. Stupid is as stupid does, I guess. It's not as safe as it used to be in the so-called good old days.

Some do...not as many but some.

Be wary of them though. I had one who ran out in front of my car waving and yelling - I thought she'd had an accident or needed help so after having to work hard to not run her over I stopped - and she ran over, got in my car, sat down and said - "take me to town" (the closest big town being 30 km away) - I asked why and she said "oh...I only wanted to stop you for a lift to a party in town - I don't want to wait for the bus". I told her to get out - (she was absolutely trashed already) and she went right off screaming and cursing - but eventually gave up.

Yes, quite a lot around here actually. It's against the law though. They are usually very creepy looking people (around my area anyway) and they look like they'd kill you in an instant. They freak me out!

I hope not. There are too many nuts in the world today that take advantage of people that are in the wrong place at the wrong time, especially hitch-hiking.
