SITUATION:
Girlfriend Turned ON her laptop one day and it was on the Windows XP loading screen for a long time then went to a black screen with the mouse cursor visible and movable. Thinking the hard drive is the problem, I took out the laptop hard drive and connected to a external shell with a USB connector and hooked it up to my desktop. When connected to the desktop, the laptop hard drive is visible. I can go into different folders but I can't go into some such as "My Music" folder, or "My Pictures" folder . I want to transfer personal files such as pictures into the desktop but when trying accessing to certain folders or files, i would get a dialog box saying I have an I/O error. I can't seem to get access to the files. Of course the data wasn't backed-up and the pictures are important to my girlfriend.

QUESTION:
Is the data still salvageable? What is the best way to access and transfer files from the laptop to the desktop in this situation? How do I fix this problem?

Try going to "Safe Mode" by pressing F8 right when you see the windows startup screen. In Safe Mode, try to see if you can resolve the issue, if not back up some of your files.

I remember this one time I could not access some files so I tried to use a ghosting program to move them and it let me access the files. You could try that or the old hard drive in the freezer trick (though it only works for problems with the moving parts and not the disk it could be a motor problem). Well anyways these are the 2 things I have done to fix a hard drive and they might work for you and they wont hurt the hard drive.

If she had a password on her account Windows does not like to let you into the files. The files are likely still there.

You can try transferring her account to your computer using the transfer wizard. To open the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

If this doesn't work try opening your computer in safe mode and signing on as the administrator. This may allow you to transfer the files.

If that doesn't work try downloading file recovery software and using that.

Go onto another computer and google up a copy of Knoppix. Burn that onto a boot disk. It's pretty much a boot-up version of linux that you don't need to install. You should be able to pull off most information if not all off the hard drive. Plus the USB drives and stuff should be working (slow though), so you can always move stuff onto storage devices.

That dos not sound like a hard drive problem to me, and the I/O error is your ide to usb converter i think. but put every thing back would be the best idea.
other way is too technical, you need a dos boot bisc and search for files, or use PQ magic to check your hard disk for errors.

It's evident you don't know what you're doing. I think you need professional help.

Yes, I think the data are still salvagable.
