Over many years I have been in the area where kids inhale helium from baloons. They do this because it changes the way they sound. I have warned them that doing so was dangerous. I was dicussing this with my son. I realised that I was advising without knowledge. Yes kids we sometime do that. So is it dangerous?

Yes and no.

Helium isn't inherently dangerous or toxic (helium/oxygen mixes are used for deep sea diving when nitrogen would be toxic)

But If you don't allow yourself to take a break between doses, you can starve your body for oxygen and cause fainting or even brain damage.

The best rule is to wait 2 min after the helium wears off before you do it again.

YES!! The problem is not with the helium itself, but with the fact that it is excluding oxygen from the lungs. People who talk with helium do it with a mixture of oxygen to keep from harming themselves.

Yes, it is. Because it can limit oxygen intake and cause unconciousness, etc. Frankly, the damage usually comes from chewing balloons where that can cause choking, asphixation.

You should try to keep balloons away from younger kids.
