In the American Revolution, a Loyalist was those who remained loyal to the Crown "King George III" The loyalist could also be considered a Patriot because of his loyalty to the Crown and civil order.
What the Crown considered a rebel and criminal, we today call a Patriot....however the word patriot is really a generic term.
Had the rebellion failed, the likes of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and so on, they all would of been hung or shot for treason and sedition.
Franklin is said to have quoted at the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence "Surly we must now all hang together, or surly we will hang together" or something like that.

During the American Revolution, Loyalists were generally the people who wanted America to stay under the rule of the King, aka loyal to the king/England. However, Patriots were the "rebels" of the war because they wanted to break away from British rule and make America a separate nation under their own rule, aka being "patriotic" and fighting for their "own" country.
