Because Bush says that an embyro is a living thing and should have the right to life. It is also, apparently morally objectionable. I don't think that any serious person with any scientific background would agree with Bush. Stem cell research is going to happen - is happening. In Korea they are, apparently, even manufacturing cells without embyros. The only thing that Bush will succeed in doing is delaying the discovery,of Medical cures which are desperately needed.

The controversy, aside from the taking of a human life, is the fact that embryonic stem cells have been terribly unsuccesful in the treatment of disease because of the rejection occurance. Adult stem cells have a lot better success and acceptance rate. Have you heard of Bone Marrow Transplants? Well, bone marrow consists of stem cells taken from adults. You have to find a match, but the criteria are a lot looser than for organ transplant. If more money would be put into research of adult stem cells, maybe we'd see more people being cured of previously uncurable diseases.

Current technology requires stems cells harvested from fetal tissue.

We currently do not have the technology available to simply clone the stem cells from other sources.

For now, stem cells and abortion are inextricably linked.

The potential for the field has economic implications beyond most reckoning.

The companies or countries sponsoring the breakthroughs in this field will make money that will make Bill Gates look like me!

Votes.
That's all.
They don't want to lose the voter support from the bible-belt. The people who voted Bush into office were the winners, meaning that there is a lot of them people around, thus the politicians want to appeal to them as best as possible, to get more future votes.

Oh, the politicians aren't thinking in the best interest of the public's health on the stem cell research.

Unfortunately, the controversy centers around the abortion issue, even though there are alternative means of getting stem cells.

Some folks can't see past the abortion issue, even though that's really not the central issue to the stem cell debate.

I wish that my answer could be more helpful to you, but you gave specific directions.

It's very sad that our leaders can't stay away from the issue that you don't want me to talk about. I can't understand this myself.

in order for the stem cells to work for the person that needs it they would have to clone an identical person just like you and use the stem cells for you to work for you.I was all for it because I have a loved one with diabetes and would love to see them not die one day .It really hurts you when its your own family and they are so young like 9 when they tell you they have diabetes.I wish there was a miracle of a cure for aids and cancer and diabetes, world hunger and all the other things.playing God is never the answer or is it playing God?Bush is the one that has a problem with it and says it s playing God, and we cant use the stem cells.

Would you murder a baby to heal the damaged spine of a man who fell drunk off a horse.. would you want a skin graft off a dead baby. If you do, then, you will have to pay for it your self, you cannot have a nickle of mine for it.. PRIVATE research is not stopped, it is only a ban on spending tax dollars on EMBRYONIC stem cell research. Do you see any private funds going wild over embryonic stem cell research?? NO . for good reason; it doesn't work. Embryonic stem cells grow so fast they try to form a person wherever they are tested, or they become cancers. God is so pissedoff about america murdering babies, that we are lucky to be a free nation still. We go to murdering babies for spare parts and it will bring america to the dung heaps.

Politicians are afraid that approving governmental funding that the uninformed might think would lead to more abortions.

This research is being done legally now in the private sector, so I am glad that big government is weak and scared. Private industry will figure it out and make someone rich when they find cures!

The majority of Americans support stem cell research, but there are different types that we disagree about (i.e. embryonic and adult stem cells)
There are huge differences between embryonic stem cell research and other types, such as adult stem cell research
For example, adult stem cell research has produced many treatments for modern day illnesses/diseases, and (to my knowledge) embryonic research has not produced results yet.
However, there is a huge potential for embryonic stem cells because they can change into any cell in the human body and they might one day cure something, but it hasn't yet.
So, personally i support stem cell research (including adult stem cell research) but not that which comes from embryos
