Kerala - a state in the South West of India - was the only freely elected communist government in the world. They spent as much money as they could on housing, schooling, hospitals and social services making Kerala a very nice place to live. They bankrupted the state, but nobody really minded that. However, there are many different kinds of communism, you know. Not just socialist communism. Think about the changes in a long continuously communist country, like China, and how different it has been under the various rulers - Mao, Deng, and others. Then, ask yourself, what is communism? If a communist leader like Mao can say 'Destroy the intellectuals and burn all the books'' and another leader like Deng can say 'To be wealthy is glorious' well, communism must be many different things to many different people.

I'm a free-market loving capitalist, but:

1) communist governments have complete control of industry and can change it according to the nation's needs
2) 100% employment
3) workers are assigned according to their interests in a true utopian communist government (can also be a disadvantage, but still...)

Advantages to whom?

For the common man, I'd say none!

For the bureaucrats and the elite, perhaps there are some.

For the ruler, well, the power to subjugate every person in his country lies with him.

All communist governments have failed or are failing now.

The problem with communism and socialism is that it is slavery... slavery of the mind. The basic human desire to push and expand both his intelectual limits and his social limits are not encouraged. In a communist society there is no reward for effort, same as socialism...why should I work or put forth effort when my contribution of putting the least amount of effort into anything is rewarded the same as that of someone pushing the limits of mind or body. Communism and socialism enslaves the soul.

* Communism is an internally stable economic system, in that those that participate benefit and those that don't are culled - creating an incentive to participate.
* Communism requires common goals and agreed upon rules/laws to allocate responsibilities and resources. If successful, this leads to a spirit of sharing builds stronger social communities, creating a stabler economy.
* Due to their sense of cooperation, healthy communistic systems are very efficient at distributing resources within their localized areas - particularly in times of need.

They are only found in very limited places, such as Cuba, China, or North Korea. Of the three, only Cuba is really even close to communist. China is maoist-capitalist, while North Korea is just whacked. It is a despotic ego-cracy, with one nut job in charge.

The communist government is the perfect form. It provides for all needs and wants of its citizens.

And if you disagree, they will shoot you.

everything!

but i'm gonna get serious... what's good about communism? nothing. but social democracy on the other hand... now that's something i could be proud of, the idea to work for a common good. but that's not the american spirit, unfortunately... nope, here in the "good ole usa.." we do things a bit differently, we do anything we can to rise above others... and it's very sad :(

How nice. I can be absolutely lazy. They tell me what to study, what job to do, whom to marry and how many kids to have. Top of it all, they will keep me perpetually poor (unless I am party boss) so that I have the motivation to earn wealth. Finally, they will put me out of my misery if I dared to dissent.

What more do you want from your government!
