I think they are great musicians. I saw them in concert in Pittsburgh about 10 years ago. They play some great jazz, though they are mostly considered pop-rock. They are not cry babies. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't comment. oaksterdamhi, what do you think of CSNY? Michael McDonald isn't part of Steely Dan- Walter Becker and Donald Fagan are Steely Dan. Steely Dan is from the novel Naked Lunch by William Burroughs.....look it up for it's meaning.....oaksterdamhi, I've heard that Neil Young has been called the Grandfather of Grunge. I actually like Stills a bit better, though Young has so many more songs to enjoy....and for as much as I enjoy Carlin, he knows not of how he speaks of Steely Dan!

Michael McDonald indeed was a "member" of the band. While you are right, used2Bafraid, about Donald Fagen and Walter Becker being "the band," McDonald did indeed sing on several songs by The Dan, including Bad Sneakers, My Old School, Don't Take Me Alive, and many, many others.
As to the original question more than eight years ago, Steely Dan is one of my all-time favorite bands, and you really haven't truly experienced the "essence" of the band if, in my opinion, you haven't listened to (in my list of top cuts) Aja; Deacon Blues; Do It Again; King of the World; Doctor Wu; Black Cow; Caves of Altamira; Boston Rag; Rikki Don't Lose That Number; Don't Take Me Alive; Gaucho; Green Flower Street (Fagen single); Here at the Western World; Hey Nineteen; Home at Last; I.G.Y. (another Fagen Single); Night by Night; Razor Boy; FM; and Third World Man.
The name "Steely Dan" was taken from William S. Burroughs' The Naked Lunch, and "The Steely Dan" was a hopped up dildo on steroids.
Steely Dan is my all-time favorite band, so there's your answer concerning what I, and many others, think about the band and their music.
Fagen and Becker are notoriously evasive during interviews, and are into high-brow, intellectual humor - or, in the great Denny Dias' own words, "No fart jokes..."
I would heartily recommend Steely Dan to...well, to ANYONE. Period. They're too good a band to pass up, transcend many various genres, and are famously fastidiously accurate in their execution of a song - and always required the same from anyone who played their music.
Enjoy that great music!!
Maitai
One last post script: If I had to pick ONE aspect in any one of the songs, I'd have to pick Denny Dias' solo in Do It Again, followed by Steve Gadd's drum solo in Aja, and finally, well...I just can't decide...listen to my suggested playlist, and form your own opinion!

Steely Dan is the BOMB ! By the way , did you know that they got the name from a romance novel and that Steely Dan is a woman's second best friend. Try figuring that one out.LOL.I always love listening to their music. DO IT AGAIN and HEY NINETEEN are two of my favorite songs by them. Paul Hardcastle did a kick *** remake of DO IT AGAIN.Check it out.

Steely Dan is good, but if you want to hear a good opinion about him, try finding commentary by George Carlin, he will give you his opinion of Steely Dan.
