Those are palmetto bugs. You must be near the coast. They're easy to kill. Borax does it very well.

Large cockroaches generally live in the shrubs and under the bark on trees. They feed on decaying and decomposing matter that builds up under the shrub areas.
I would recommend raking under the shrubs and trees to remove excess leaves and debris. Also get rid of any old firewood and keep any new firewood as far from the foundation as you can. This will eliminate some of the harborage areas.
Seal up any cracks around windows and doors to discourage any possible indoor invaders.
Boric acid outside will only be effective until the next rain or until it blows away- very safe but not a feasible option as it works very slowly to kill anything anyway.
There are many granular baits available now that are very effective and safe if applied properly. A perimeter treatment would be recommended to help cut down the population.
I would definitely recommend a professional to limit exposure to any pesticides that are needed to pets and kids

Call an exterminator, NOW!! The further south you go, the bigger the bugs get b/c of the warm weather. S/he will help you figure out what to do, but I don't think you can handle this yourself. Roaches are really resilient.

I know what you mean. I was staying in a motel in Durham one time and I was awakened in the middle of the night by two roaches, one had me by the left leg and the other had my right and they were dragging me out of bed. When i woke up the bigger one said to the small one, "Should we eat him here or drag him back to the nest?" The smaller one replied, "Let's eat him here, if we drag him back to the nest the big boys might take him away from us".

Cockroaches are like Cher, Madonna, and the Rolling Stones, no matter what you do they will always come back...they could survive a nuclear holocaust.

Go to the nearest Home Depot and buy some "Bengal" Roach powder and sprinkle it around the outside of your place, and follow all of the rest of the directions. This power is very powerful.
