Visit Oaxaca, it has a very good atmosphere and a rich history. Make sure you get some Black Beans and eat some chicken, it is AHHMAZING! Have fun

Hey Dave,
I visited both Mexico City and Oaxaca City last summer. Both have a lot to offer, but it depends on what you are looking for. The anthropological museum in Mexico City is pretty incredible. The nightlife is good and public transit is convenient. It's also overwhelmingly large. Oaxaca City has a smaller feel to it. There is also nightlife there and I found people to be a little friendlier. I think you get a little better cultural experience in Oaxaca.
If you decide on Mexico City, check out Puebla as well -- it was one of my favorite towns there.

Depends what you are looking for. Mexico City fast pace, very busy and Oaxaca more of the rural & cultural experience

Since you probably land in Mexico City ... why not do both at least for a few days.
Oaxaca does have a teachers strike that has been disrupting the downtown area for months. Might not be a good time for there
