because many years ago it was a status symbol to be able to go abroad, so the tan was the status. In victorian times white meant upper class, or did not have to do manual labour in the sun, and parasols were used to keep the clever people white. It seems there are tanning studios all over every high street, why. It looks stupit, and tacky, and o.k. if you live in a hot place, most people stay in the shade. Enjoy the lovely sun, just do not let it age you and make you look cheap.

Hey, you try being white as a freaking sheet, and see how you like it. It's very gross looking in the dead of winter!
I'm not advocating that people fry themselves and get skin cancer, but the sun can give you a nice tint in a way that no amount of makeup can give you. It takes the edge off of all that whiteness, if you know what I mean.

That is a very good question. At some point, at some time in history, someone white thought that making their skin darker would benefit them in some way. I fear that we won't ever know the true answer. It seems rather silly and just plain stupid to put your health at risk just to look good. You want a tan but you don't want to be black, hell nah!

I think people tan because they dont want to be so blindingly white that they can use the suns reflection off thier skin to signal the aliens up above!

when i was younger i was just desperate to have a tan, i have red hair, blue eyes and very pale skin. I have gotten so badly burnt that iv blistered twice and i dont mean small blisters i mean blisters that covered my thigh. since i was 16 and grown up i have never used any sun cream with a spf less than 30, its just not worth it. dont get me wrong im still desperate for a tan but since reading in a newspaper that if you have been burnt so badly that you have blistered you are twice as likey to get skin cancer iv being getting my tan from a bottle, completely safe and as long as you dont go over the top i.e christina aguilera in the "cant hold us down"days, always looks good

I personaly like being pale. Dark skin is for those who were born with it, and I, was born pasty. And it works for me, the sun is nice and all, but it's overrated in my opinion. Oh, and way to be old school with the victorian thing, I'm impressed.

Tan is just more attractive no one wants to look like a ghost. The sun gives you a hint of color when you need it.
