The new Intel Conroe chip is significantly faster and more efficient than any AMD chip In an effort to keep market share AMD has severely cut prices. It's a great time to build a new system whichever Brand you decide.
Until the new chip AMD was much more efficient and ran cooler.

It depends on which generation of CPUs you are referring to.
Back when the Athlon first came out, the P-III was slightly ahead in terms of "performance-per-Megahertz". Back then, everyone was stuck on the CPU speed rating as being the number one spec to look for when buying a PC.
Then when the P4 first hit store shelves, consumers were blown away to find that they were 1.3 and 1.4 GHz (a huge leap at that time from the 1 GHz mark set by the P-III and Athlon). However, this is when things changed. It didn't take long before magazines and critics discovered that the first P4's were actually "slower" overall than its predecessors. Intel countered that in certain types of apps that processed large chunks of data (such as audio and video encoding), the P4 easily had the lead. The argument that speed wasn't the only important spec began.
The Athlon remained essentially unchanged for the most part for several years. As speeds increased, the P4 started to pull away with the lead. AMD enthusiasts still argued though that the P4 had to reach several hundred more megahertz than the Athlon to get similar performance -- and they were right.
Today, the Athlon 64 and X2 can outperform an Intel P4 or D processor running about 1GHz slower. That's just amazing. Intel has recently released the Core Duo CPU (Conroe), which is destined to change the game again, taking things back into Intel's favor. You can read more about it at TomsHardware.com.

AMD doesn't advertise by it's clock speed because all of their processors are clocked somewhat lower than Intel's therefore they use the XXXX+ numbers indicating the relative performance to the Intel's. So for example you bought a Athlon 64 3200+, that means that the processor's speed is about equivalent to an Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz.

AMD and Intel measure clock speeds differently. In response to the person who said that Intel has the fastest CPU on the market, not for long! AMD announced last week that by Dec. they would have a "Quad-Core" processor!

yes, but not quite true, in some tech. aspect, but if you're a gamer person you propably prefer the amd it has better resolution and speed compare to intel, but in some basic operation amd is lagging in intel, as i said it all depends on you and what you wanted for your cpu.
