Their music has withstood the test of time and will be around a lot longer than this rap garbage that is around now, ditto stuff from Paris Hilton, the Simpsons, and all these other groups. And if you'd ask a lot of the rock groups today, they'd admit they were influenced by the Beatles and/or Stones. The lyrics have something to say and can be understood and aren't just meaningless noise. Take some time, get a Stones Greatest Hits cd (High Tide and Green Grass is a good one) and listen to the words; do the same with any Beatles cd except perhaps for the White Album which had a lot of self-indulgent crap on it along with some good tunes - Sergeant Pepper would be a good choice. See if they don't make you feel good just listening to them. But, stay off the cell phone and away from other distractions the first time so you can really listen to the words and music.

I was in the Tenth grade when the Beatles made their first American tour. I remember popular music both before and after the British Invasion of the Sixties. It changed the face of music forever. The sound that came from England was new and different. For most of my generation The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and many other British bands that don't exists anymore defined our generation. They were more than bands, they were icons for a new way of thinking. They were models of a new look. No one had dared to do the bold things that they did. Take the time to study the history of rock and roll and you will understand that what you think of now as old and dated led to the bands and groups that you appreciate now. I am a flower child, gone to seed. I still love good rock music. Bands like Arrowsmith and Bon Jovi, which you may also feel are dated, are my favorites now. But I still listen to The Stones and The Beatles. You certainly can't deny that any band that has had the longevity of the Stones must have something going for it. By the way, my Favorite Beatles album is Rubber Soul. Give it a listen. If you pay attention you will begin to notice that many of the alternative groups of today owe them much.

You have to understand that the Beatles were basically the first to do what so many bands since then have tried to duplicate. They were great song writers, and they produced great songs for many years. Like almost all bands, their most well known songs are not necessarily the best ones. Listen to all of their songs. You'll hear some surprisingly good songs that sound well before their time. Also, the Beatles did a great job of changing with the times.
The Rolling Stones I haven't figured out. They aren't as good a 8 other classic rock bands that I can name.

They are very overrated. I mean their great and will last forever, but they are not worship great. But it's just these songs have all the basics of music and they were innovative at the time. The impact of the Beatles - not only on rock & roll but on Western culture - is simply incalculable. As musicians, they proved that rock & roll could embrace a limitless variety of harmonies, structures and sounds; virtually every rock experiment has some precedent on Beatle records.
Just think if you were listening to a song and they had this whole new beat, harmony, sound that you've never heard before and it was great. So each band after that started using the same kind of sound and the equipment they made popular.
You are fit to have your own opinion. But i love everything the Beatles did, but rolling stones just a little of their songs.

The fact that you don't have cd's from either of these bands explains it all. I used to think the same thing about the Beatles until I bought Revolver. I guarantee if you get that album and listen to it several times you won't be saying that anymore. Most songs people know of the Beatles are their most accessable work, and don't come close to showing what the Beatles were actually capable of.
You may as well have said, "I don't get the fuss about Six Flags, but I've only gone on a couple of the rides..."

These bands came along, indeed started the " British invasion" of rock music in the 60's. Originally I myself didn't like the Beatles because I thought their songs at that time were silly(not to mention all the screaming teenage girls that made the group hard to hear) but as time went along and I began to really listen to them I changed my mind about their music. Now I think they were one of the greatest bands ever. As for the Stones they were the bad boys of rock which basically was their appeal. And as time went on people began to appreciate the songs written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richard. They simply became the best band in the rock world. And while other bands have come and gone , the Stones have persevered. Obviously not everybody is going to understand their appeal, but for those of us who grew up in the 60's, the Stones and Beatles are the best.

People who grew up in the 60's and the 70's seem to think that they have an "exclusive" to the Beatles and The stones and some other groups of that era. Even though most of these groups sucked back then and certainly in to days standards. But you can not tell these nut cases this. You tell them that Beatles or the Stones are over rated, you have just stepped all over their holy beliefs.
Its called, "living in the past" or being a rooster who takes credit for the sunrise. The people from this "Get stoned" age, call them selves the Lost Generation. Go go figure, right!

Ok, here's the deal, I'll put this in a way that might make sense. I have no idea how old you are. But when you were little, I'm betting there's a cartoon that you just freaked over. And if you think about it now, you'll smile and mabey giggle and think 'they rock'
The Beatles and the Stones came around when there was 4 channels of TV and it stopped at 2am, (really the TV stopped showing stuff) No internet, no Ipods, no cassette players. If you wanted to listen to music, you listened on the radio or you whipped out your big 10 inch, record. These bands are the soundtracks of their times. When you hear them, it takes you to that time. (Just like the theme song of that cartoon makes you smile)

The Beatles and the Stones were pioneers of music. Both bands, foremost the Beatles, took music to a new level with groundbreaking experiments. For example in "Strawberry Fields Forever" one can hear a reversed symbol crash frequently throughout the song. Techniques like this had never been done before and are still quite interesting to listen to. Secondly, people don't like both of these bands just for the music, their attraction has to do with the people as well. Lennon, McCartney, and Mick were both figureheads of sixties culture.

A generation of people were growing up and going through all kinds of changes. So was the world. Their music reflected that. As for the Beatles, they were musical pioneers on the edge - inventing new sounds, song styles, etc. Of course, the drugs played a part in infkuencing them, but that was part of the culture back then. If you're truly wanting to find out, read a few books that can really explain it more fully.
