the easiest way to explain this is with a mental diagram.
imagine a box. where all your normal thoughts live and work.
it's the box that all of your thinking comes from.
outside the box is a world unknown and open for exploration.
if you think outside of the box the possibilities are endless so you couldn't trap them in a box because there are sooo many other possibilities and paths to choose from out of what your regular thinking may be.

It is if you jsut set up a new set of dichtomies, particularly those based on the old ones, or if you fail to rid yourself of the ghosts from the past (spirit of Marxism, for example). Some of them refuse to be exorcised. It's good to recognize this, though. Doesn't change our entrapment within the languages and systems of meaning we must utilize in which to think, but perhaps if you see these as fluid (boxes with liquid sides), it won't seem quite as restraining. I get claustrophobia too!

We need a container we can visualize (box, jar, bottle, wagon, train, etc) as we create metaphors to communicate. And to think and solve problems. If thinking was only for the sake of thinking alone, we would do less and less of it. The image of a "box" is cute for some; a Middle School student came back with "pair of boxes" when your question was presented... just enjoy it.

well, the box is kept in a small room (like a closet or a pantry) while many people think outside the box, they are still trapped in the room. (possibly a metaphor or rationality or sanity) There is a whole house still left to explare full or Inrrationallity, Irrevence, strangeness, not to mention the just plain sick.

No. Thinking outside of the box is basically thinking of ideas that are uncommon.....it is not neccesarily a new box if you only have one idea...unless you want to imagine it like one big box with a bunch of small boxes around it.

great question! i think we have enlarged the box, but we are still in a box because we can still only see things from a limited perspective. maybe we could make it a circle instead? lol

That would depend on the shape of the ether.
I think that thought would be stuck in between a layer of the onion.
