First of all: Here is the correct spelling of Clampett(not clappid)
Jed was a mountaineer man {trapping, fishing & shooting deer,qual etc. to feed his family.}
Here are the lyrics to the Bev./Hillbls. song;>>>>
Come' n listen to my story "bout a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, who tried to keep his family fed
And then one day, he was shootin' at some food
And up through the ground came a bubblin' crude
Oil, that is, black gold, Texas tea.
Well, the first thing you know, old Jed's a millionaire
Kin folk said, Jed, move away from there
Said, Californey is the place you otta be
So they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly Hills, that is,swimmin' pools, movie stars
Well, now it's time to say goodbye to Jed and all his kin
They would like to thank you folks for kindly droppin' in
You're all invited back again to this locality
To have a heapin' helpin' of their hospitality
Hillibilly, that is, set a spell, take your shoes off
Y'all come back now, hear.
ENJOY.****REBELCAT:~~~~

He was a mountaineer according to the theme song. I don't know if that only descibes where he lived or if it also describes what he did. I would guess farmer.

Back in the 60's he would have been called a mountaineer/ farmer/hunter. Today, in today's prejudiced society, he would be called a dumb redneck.

I'm pretty sure he was a trapper because he was "shootin' at some food and up through the ground came a bubblin' crude...oil, that is."
