i'm doing a short film for my video productions class and i'd like to hear ur suggestions. i'd best prefer them to be:
* philosophical
* artistic
* philosophies affecting society today
* about the strangeness of life

i'm trying to make it as different as possible. like i'm even thinking of not using any concrete story involving a main character. but like a collage of clips completely unrelated to each other and put it together in a way where it starts to build one complete idea.

i'd really appreciate it if someone could at least share some ideas. :) thank you.

Most people go to war thinking to bring peace.

Here are a few that I can think of off-hand:

1. Maudlin women that get on Oprah and cry over a sentimental story but then go home and neglect their kids, sleep around on their husbands, starve their animals, play cat games at the office and on and on.

2. SUV drivers with bumper stickers that support the war in Iraq.

3. Obese women that act like they are more moral because they wear conservative clothes and shoes

4. Obese people that drive SUVs that couldn't fit into any kind of chemical gear and that support the war in Iraq

5. People that drive gas guzzlers complaining about the cost of fuel, when people all over the rest of the world are made to drive reasonable vehicles.

6. Spoiled kids that go to expensive colleges, drive expensive cars and then act like they are more moral than the rest of the world.

7. Jerks that are blowing up schools in Afghanistan, ostensibly for religion, but really to advance their own materialistic agenda.

8. Women (let's be PC) that have tons of kids, so they can't afford much, but then get angry when they see people who have taken a more conservative approach to life and then resort to sneering at them in the street as if they are spoiled white rich witches.

9. Women who go all out to avoid sitting on a toilet seat to avoid germs, but then don't clean their mess up when they ultimately miss and then leave the bathroom without even washing their hands.

10. Capitalistic caregivers (doctors)

11. American health insurance is a contradiction in terms

12. Public servants - yeah whatever.

I think most people will serve themselves before others. Not enough people are kind in the world. We are here for a short time, why are we trashing the place so fast? No one bothers to learn they just assume. We are following leaders that at best are just guessing what might happen next. No one has any clue what will happen each day yet we all seem to get out of bed in a hurry so that we aren't late for work. People are all addicted to one very powerful drug and that is life. We will sometimes kill to keep our addictions going but at the same time we destroy someone elses addiction.

I'm sure you can get five seconds out of that heap.

Without a doubt, political correctness and liberalism.
Being liberal and politically correct in this day and age is the irony of all ironies. Liberals make laws and rules that are so general that they are one size fits all. Unfortunately, one size never fits all and they are so general and full of loopholes that they actually cover no one.
Political correctness is the same. We have become so paranoid of being different from one another that we have come up with a way to make everyone fit into the same mould. In doing so, we have lost our individuality and our ability to stand up and say something potentially life altering because of offending one person in a crowd of 5000 and suffering possible litigation.

excellent: thought provoking and challenging. how about the "one complete idea" being the successful struggle for individuality and "transcendence" in the face of repression and ever increasing societal movement toward mediocrity and conformity. it's really quite archetypal, after all, and thus would automatically resonate with the viewers. you could have a number of vignettes showing different expressions of the struggle, and then end it with an "archetypal" image of "wholeness/success" in the "quest". perhaps something mandalic, or the like. perhaps danced. i see the last scene as coming from a complete fade out before, and then from the blackness the final "image". perhaps in silence. maybe a little too dramatic, but it sounds kind of interesting.

I agree with the religion answer. I'll use Christianity as an example. Christianity was based on the need for power, wealth, and absolute control. In order to have that absolute control, they lied about the conflicting religions. Call those who worshiped the Earth witches. Deemed their acts of praise as sadistic. Those who weren't turned to Christianity by fear of Hell, were tortured. Murdered in the name of God to save their souls. Then they turned around and said murder violates God's laws, and those who do it are condemned to hell. They are told to be more like Jesus. Yet are taught to hate anyone who defies convention. Those who are not straight edged God fearing people who live by 'the good book' are hell bound. Yet the vast majority are living the exact opposite, and pointing their fingers at those who choose not to hide behind the church. Distracting everyone and themselves from the hypocricy they live.
It's unorthodox, and may piss people off. But do some research about the beginning of Christianity, and the death of the female dominated society. I think it'd make for an interesting project.

We have sent men to the moon and back several times, but we can't invent whiteout for cake icing mistakes?

Evolution gains more and more confirming evidence every day (see evolution of finches in the last 20 years on Indonesian islands) right in front of our faces, and Yet the Kansas school board votes to include Intelligent Design in their science classes.

Many, many religions on the planet each claiming they are the one true religion.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. It is well accepted to say "I can't define art conclusively, but I can tell when I see it!" Hmmm... one man's art is another man's garbage. And one man's garbage is another man's treasure.

Most people tend to absent mindedly think that nature is wonderful and peaceful. Yet, (and there are tons of examples) male lions routinely kill all the small cubs in a pride that he has just taken over from the previously ruling lion. Chimpanzees have been documented clearly making war on neighboring "tribes" of other chimpanzees and killing each other. Many predators will, cruelly to us, play with their food, wounding it first so it can't get away and then chasing and recatching the prey animal over exended periods of time.

Our technology today comes from the application of science for so many things like cars, cell phones, computers, etc., and yet many of those same people that claim to be scientifically knowedgeable will routinely check out their horoscopes which have been clearly, scientifically debunked over and over again.

The Catholic church just recently apologized for having branded Galileo a heritic.

So many religions profess peace and tolerance of their fellow humans, and yet most of the blood spilled throughout history has been driven by religious beliefs in the name of religion.

Those responsible for 911 really, truly did believe they would be rewarded by god for what they did.

Most people would say that our universe is "local" in that something modified over "here" cannot possibly have an effect on something over "there" unless some information or affect travels over "there" to affect it. And Yet, physicists have demonstrated time and again that our universe is actually Non-local at the quantum level of everything: a photon measured over "here" can instantaneously affect a change in another photon many millions of miles away!

Whew! I could go on and on, but now I think I'm just wasting space. Good luck!!

Here's a couple of thoughts...Does life imitate art, or does art imitate life? Or, why are people never satisfied? People always seem to want something that's out of reach, then when they get it, they find it's not what they wanted after all. What they want is what they originally had. Or what about something to do with the old saying "Youth is wasted on the young". Combining the wisdom of age with the enthusiasm and drive of the young.

in the past society was viewed more romantically than nowadays.

nowadays, society viewed as the collection of traditions, customs, etc. that "people" does, just because its what everybody does it. its all what we do without actually thinking about it, mechanically.

life is kind of the contrary than society, although it is implicit in the concept of life that its not always possible to do what you want (rules of society wont let you).
