Depends on what your hunting what gauge you want, but the standard is a 12 gauge. Remington is good, you can get all sorts of after market parts for it so you can customize it for what your hunting or home defense. Benelli is another good one. Mossberg isn't bad

20 guage is great for woodland hunting of small creatures, 12 guage is better for waterfowl because of the range, and Deer slugs don't work well in less than a 16 guage. If I had to buy an all-around perfect shotgun I would get a 16-guage. Right in the middle.

12 gauge pump (Mossberg 500 or Remington 870) both good starting out guns. Not too expensive and great quality. 20 Gauge is a great light load with similar patterns to 12 gauge shot patterns. At 25 yards it's impossible to tell the difference between a 20 gauge and a 12 gauge shotshell pattern on paper.Yes the 12 gauge would have more pellets, and the 20gauge carrys a pattern a longer distance, so it evens out at 25 yards.

I usually use a Winchester 12 Gauge Shotgun for regular hunt, but I use in close-to-mid-range hunts with my Bulgarian Makarov 9x18 Pistol.

Depends on what you are hunting. I use a 12 gauge for some game and a 20 gauge for smaller birds and a 4.10 or wasscally wabbits.

A 12 ga. is a good all around shot gun with various shots available for different game, and a wide pattern for maximum effectiveness. It can also be used for deer with rifled slugs, or interchangeable barrels are also available. It's a winner in my book!
