I want an expert opinion on someone in the field of editing if possible. I'm trying to build a really powerful computer. Something like this. 2x270 opteron, tyan mobo, 2 gb of memory 3hd = 2x74gb raptors and 1 300gb maxtor 16mb. Would this yield exceptional results for editing video and for using after effects. I've been doing wedding's for a while but my current system is just not up to par, and some more larger projects are coming up. And recommendations would be appreciated, and another thing, no mac!

You're definitely going to want a dual-core processor; right now, Intel's are outperforming AMD's, and you'll probably want at least 2ghz. You'll also want at least the 2gb of memory you have, at least 400-500gb of hd space (if you are recording and editing HD content, you'll want more hd space), a good video card (probably with at least 256mb memory), a good sized monitor (widescreen, if possible, because it'll give you more space to work with multiple windows or projects) with good resolution, contrast ratio, and response time (12ms or less), and an optical or laser mouse for better precision. In terms of DVD burners go, you should consider a dual-layer drive because it doubles the amount of data you can put on a disk. This is good for long weddings or HD content, as there will be more data to pack onto the DVD.

Absolutely. The dual-Opteron configuration is an excellent choice, since the Opteron setup gives each CPU it's own memory channel (unlike the Athlon X2 or any of the Intel CPU's).

The Raptor hard drives, are of course, still top-of-the-line and also a great choice for any system. 2GB of memory is decent, though you might want to consider 3GB or more for a major video editing system that will be running many threaded processes at once..

Did you make a decision yet on the video card? Check out Matrox's website. The classic X.10 and X.100 cards were the elite just a couple years ago. I think Matrox has since updated those cards to new models, but they are definitely worth a look. The reason why you'd want to consider a card like these has to do with "real-time" features, which can save many hours of your time if you plan on doing a lot of editing. You can preview a lot of effects without waiting for them to be rendered, since the cards have this ability built-in to the hardware encoder. Also, Adobe Premiere Pro has been efficiently tested and coded to take advantage of such a card.

Sounds pretty good to me! I have built a computer just for video editing and capture. I have: Asus A8V mobo, AMD Athlon 3800+ dual-core processor, Evga 256MB AGP video card, 2GB RAM, 1-250GB SATA II HDD, 1-120GB IDE HDD, and a Zalman CPU fan. You can get 150GB raptors! Sorta pricey, but? If you can hold out till after Dec., AMD will have a "Quad-Core" processor.
