The top jazz legends are Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Louie Armstrong, Billie Holliday, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck Quartet, & Django Reinhart. This is pretty much a universally recognized top ten. These cover the whole jazz genre - big band, bebop, cool, dixieland, etc.
My current favorites (I'm into guitar) are Larry Carlton, Nils, Lee Ritenour, the Rippingtons, The Crusaders, etc.

If you want to know about jazz, than you should listen to Phil Schapp on WKCR(89.9), Columbia University. That guy knows everything, right down to when CharlieParker took craps. He loves to talk about jazz, which makes it fun to listen (much more fun than reading).

Phil has a show called "Bird Flight", which focuses on Charlie "Bird" Parker. Its on weekdays starting at 8:20am. He is on air at other times too. I hope you check it out. You will learn and be entertained, in my opinion.

PS- WKCR is also on the web, WKCR.org I think. WKCR also plays all types of great jazz, sometimes album sides at a time.

Important point: Kenny G. is not jazz; Charlie Parker is. One of my favorite, relatively recent jazz cd's is Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island.

There are lots of different styles of jazz. Who do you like to listen to? Try a book on the history of jazz, lots of them out there, and then try listening to different styles.
