Should a car be cooled down first before opening the oil cap to add oil? I tried to open the cap just after I turned off my car, but it was really hot. I was afraid to open it....thought it might explode. Thanks!

There isn't a pressure behind the oil cap. You can use a rag to grab it and open slowly.

If you are just adding oil, yes, you can do it while it is cool.

BE SURE that you are opening the correct cap though. Radiator caps are under high pressure. It will badly burn you. Also, if you add oil to a wrong place, it will cause you all kinds of problems. Please read your manual and CORRECTLY identify the oil cap.

No it doesn't have to be cooled down. The one cap under the hood that will explode is the radiator cap. Don't every take that cap off when it is hot.

No,all you need in your situation is to just keep a handy rag or cloth somewhere under the hood for the next time you need to add oil or check the level so you dont get your pretty hands/fingers burned or dirty either.

you don't want it hot, just warm it up a bit, wait a few minutes for it drain back into the pan, then check it. Don't add any oil unless you are actually a quart low, makes it easier and gets rid of half filled oil bottles.

It matters if you don't want to burn your fingers on the hot cap.

It should be warm to change it.. when it's completely cool, drive around the neighborhood once.

But if you're just adding, doesn't really matter.
