Your best bet would be to either use a CD or a DVD burner...Trying to connect them with various cables can prove to be a difficult task, at best in my experience... the problem is Windows XP tries to set everything up for you whenever you need to do it manually.

PC Backup, Aloha Bob and PC Relocator are 3 software programs that come with the proper cables (make sure about the cables if you need them) and software that will do this automatically for you - very easy - especially Aloha Bob.
Here's a really good article on what you can do yourself that I think is pretty easy too.

Keep in mind that you don't want to copy programs - because they have to be properly installed. You typically just want to copy data.
Another suggestion:
Go into your new computer and click on Start/Help and Support. Type "How To Use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard By Using the Windows XP" and you will get a couple of different ways to use this. The Windows XP disk will work in your older computer to do this.
Remember, the more you try - the more you learn.

That depends if the hard drive is SATA or IDE. You could also network them using a standard CAT 5 straight network cable and transfer data that way. Hooking the old hard drive into the new computer is simple really. Just carefully plug it into the existing IDE strap attached to the new hard drive as a slave drive. Then just select and copy whatever files you want to keep.

This won't answer your question but it's worth thinking about.
Having lost so much data in the past with crashed hard discs,I purchased a portable hard disc.60 G.You can keep all your files on this and it's only the size of your wallet, can carry it anywhere and plug it into anybodies USB 2 port.No worries about lost data again.

there are 3 way around.
1. good adn reliable : buy an cheaper external usb hard disk, and copy over to this, and copy back to new comouter
2. take out your existing hard disk, plug to new computer as 2ndary slave, and reboot, and copy over file from newly displayed drive letters to new computer drive
3. inter networking, get cross cable from sim lim/challenger...connect both computer, cofigure IPs
then copy over in between as you can do in Local area network
