For your issue with your weight, I'd recommend exercising at home or a gym you're comfortable with, before going to the doctor's. Also exercising with friends and/or family is another good idea. But don't feel embarrassed when the doctor weighs you because some of your problems could be coming from your weight. If you're still feeling self-conscious, don't be afraid to tell your doctor how you feel and ask your doctor for tips to shed those extra pounds.

Well there are a lot of bigger people than there are thinner people. I'm sure any doctor has seem them all. Don't be embarrassed when they weigh you, it's very normal. Know how many people probably weigh more than you or may be in the same weight as you especially when they go to the doctor's? Lots and lots. So go and get a checkup!

don't go on a diet. change your diet. have a lifestyle change.

go to runnersworld.com and start a walk/run program. also check out their articles on nutrition and read the nutrition forum.

you didn't put weight on overnight, and you won't lose it overnight

good luck!

and.. don't be embarrased at the doctors... just remeber that doctors weigh all types of people, many of whom are more overweight than you are. also, doctors aren't always the most judgemental people because they have the knowledge many people don't. they don't hold the same ignorant stereotypes as the first poster who answered this question.

be secure with yourself. i'm sure there are a lot of things you are good at, and i'm sure you have many wonderful qualities. if you work on your self-esteem while starting to develop healthy lifestyle habits, you will lose weight :)

edit: i just looked at your other questions... you aren't overweight... i assumed you were older and very overweight. you are a healthy 11 year old! just stay active and you will be fine!

You're not overweight, you're gravitationally enhanced.

And to all you folks that feel 'just lose weight' is the answer, it ain't that easy. That's like telling a smoker 'just quit smoking' or an alcoholic 'just quit drinking'. There are lots of reasons why we overweight people are the way we are, sometimes food is the solace we need when jerks give flippant answers. In my case, I gave up smoking and drugs cold turkey, trouble was I substituted food as my addiction. Not an easy habit to break.

I would think that you would be more embarrassed of people everywhere seeing you overweight than what a machine says about exactly how much you weigh. You aren't hiding anything visually, so what's the big deal?

I'm sorry you feel so self conscious. It's just very important information for the physician to have. Weight indicates the dosage of medication you need.

No one wants to be overweight, so I understand how you feel. Try taking baby steps towards making better life choices where food and exercise are concerned. Feel good about yourself too! Each day tell yourself three positive things you love about yourself.

Keep in mind that the doctor probably sees a lot of patients per day, let alone in their entire career. They have seen dead skinny, average, overweight, pink hair, 4 toes, you name it. Do not feel embarrased! The doctor will never be judgemental of you, and they are there to help you.

Tell them you don't want to be weighed. I work for a doctor, and unless weight is an issue in the reason for the visit, we let patients decline being weighed. What are they going to do, kick you out? Just tell them you'd prefer not to be weighed.

Yes it can be a bit disheartening, I think all of us have felt that way at some point or another in our lives. I got tired of it myself and made time to exercise (stay active), cut down on the carbs, started eating more fruits and vegetables, cut down on drinks that are high in sugar. Now don't get me wrong, every now and then I get cravings for cake or popeye's chicken, but because I exercise at least 5 days a week - there are minimal negative effects. Oh and drink lots of water at room temperature, cold water leaves your body quickly and is unable to hydrate you, burn fat and calories. Think about it, if you don't save your life, who will. Don't skip meals and eat at least 3 hours before you go to bed.
